P&G Yuzu Days (2017.07): Yuzuru’s Private Life, Part 1 “Life in Toronto, Canada”

Yuzu loves nature, (continues to) expound at length about earphones, doesn’t care about fashion, and talks about his gratitude toward his mother, superwoman and an integral part of Team Yuzu :’) – gladi.

Five years since he moved to Toronto, Canada during springtime when he was 17. Hanyu-senshu who feels a sense of fulfillment every day he is able to train and be stimulated by working hard alongside fellow competitors at the top level in the world. How does he spend his time in private? Over two posts, Yuzu Days will report about his everyday life and how he spends his off time.

In YUZURU’S PRIVATE LIFE (Part 1), he talks about his life in Canada, what he carries around and what he wears normally, and what he eats.

Life in Canada

–––– From Sendai, where you lived together with the entire family, to Toronto, Canada with your mother. To Hanyu-senshu, what’s your impression of Toronto as a place to live?

YH   Toronto has abundant nature and it is beautiful. Even in a residential area, I am surrounded by many big trees as if in a forest, and I think, “Ahh~today is a beautiful day too~” Although Sendai, said to be the "City of Trees,” has lots of nature as well, it wasn’t as immersed in nature as [Toronto]. Now when I am curious about a plant, I’ll ask my mother, “This flower…what is it?” and so forth. Many flowers unseen in Japan are in bloom here, and I often find squirrels and small birds like robins as well. Being able to live surrounded by nature, somehow it’s just very relaxing, and I think it’s great!

Personal belongings and fashion

–––– What you carry around and what you wear bring out the everyday you. What are the contents of the bag you’re always carrying, and can you talk about what you wear?

YH   When I travel for competition, I carry my game [console], earphones, music player, portable speaker, and also self care items, such as the massage ball, all in a huge backpack. Especially with earphones, I am fixated to the extent of cramming and bringing however many pairs––at first I was just looking for pairs in shapes that don’t come off during sports, and selecting based on the form factor. But in the process of trying out a variety [of earphones], it was interesting that each model had its respective merits in terms of sound quality and I got obsessed. Now I have more than 50 pairs. There are times when I want to hear the untreated sound exactly as it is, and times when I want to raise my spirits. For example, "today I want clean, bright trebles that sparkle,” or “this sense of pounding bass going ‘don-don’ is great”, or “I want a mild, warm sound”… Depending on how I feel at the moment and the usage, I differentiate and pick the pair from my collection.

(cont. about fashion)

I’m not so interested about trends in fashion. If you say which is it, my emphasis is on functionality. I wear jerseys a lot in practice, so I’m particular about the stretchability [of the fabric] and whether it feels good on my skin. For example, in normal training, it is about thin but durable materials that can withstand a lot of stretching. When I’m traveling in flight, there are times when it is cold, so I pick thicker but, at the same time, breathable fabrics. I rarely go shopping since I came to Toronto, so I [ask / listen to] stylists during photoshoots and do my research online, and I’m always just looking for things that feels comfortable on.

About his dietary life

–––– In Toronto where eating habits are different, in order to create stamina and for the sake of body conditioning, how do you eat? What are your thoughts and feelings toward your mother who supports your dietary life?

YH   My mother always cooks for me in Toronto. She would always ask, “what do you want to eat today?” Because she understands that, based on my physical condition at the time, the things that I can eat and the the things that I can’t would differ. She makes food that is easy for me to eat during that particular phase, while also keeping nutritional balance in mind––she made yakiniku (t/n: Japanese grilled meat) so that I can build physical strength, for example––and I am really grateful for that. My mother had to wake up even in the middle of the night when there was need to get in touch with Japan, which is in a different time zone. Speaking English all the time when abroad. Accompanying me to practice. And more. All of which I think are extremely exhausting. Not only physically, but also mentally tiring. Because, although I can take breaks and rest, there is no rest for my mother. But––and perhaps only I think so––but I feel that my mom, too, is fighting alongside me, with me. I’m truly thankful to my mother who supports all aspects of my life in Toronto.

YUZU DAYS, June 2017 (P&G, myrepi.com)

It’s a product promotion again this month.  Yuzu said he started using the Braun Oral-B electric toothbrush 3 years ago and he loves it. He goes on talking about the toothbrush (Pro-7000 Black), so I won’t translate it.  If you want to buy the same toothbrush, it’s this one below, pic from amazon.com.  I heard it’s already sold out in Japan. ^^

Yuzuru in P&G interview, May 2017. (it’s a promotion for laundry softener)

“I do not like strong smells like perfume. When I pass by duty-free shops in the airport, there are times that my nose itches due to the cosmetics and perfumes. But the subtle smell of the softener from clothes is very natural and I think it is a nice scent. The smell of the laundry or the smell of home gives me the feeling of “my own fragrance”, and I feel very secure.

When I change into clean training clothes, the soft smell puts me at ease and I switch to enter into “Alright, now I will work hard and do my best!” Mother knows me well and so the softener is not changed much, and with the nice scent, I can practise comfortably.

After training, I put my sweaty training clothes ‘poi’* into the washing machine and I leave the rest to Mother. Having clean, nicely scented clothes to wear and being able to train with peace of mind seems like something very ordinary, but it is not to be taken for granted! I am very grateful to Mother who has to grapple with big loads of laundry every day.
I hear from Mother that she combines ‘Lenor Happiness’ with ‘Aroma Jewel’ so that we can enjoy varying scents. The fragrance does not get stronger but instead, there is a wider range of it. I really appreciate Mother’s thoughtfulness to such an extent.“

P&G Product Special Interview (April 2017)

(This month’s P&G interview with Yuzuru is a product promotion.  But it’s still interesting, so I translated part of it.)

“I am rather sensitive to smells. When I travel, there are times when I am bothered by the smell of the room, so recently I have been bringing along a room fragrance spray and eye masks with a nice smell. I like calming scents like lavender and chamomile. Being surrounded by a nice scent before sleeping, I can relax and the quality of sleep is also improved. Sleep is ‘maintenance time’ for healing body and mind. It is very important to restore the mood/feeling, so scents help with that.”

“When I participate in ice shows, I am very much indebted to ‘Febreze’. (laughs) The temperature at ice show venues are set higher than at competitions, so that customers do not have to protect themselves from the cold and it would be more comfortable for them. But it is hard for the performers as we perspire a lot more compared to competitions.
Our costumes are delicate and need to be hand washed, but sometimes there are 2 shows in one day and there is not enough time (for washing and drying). At those times, I will spray Febreze, 'shu’, directly on the costume. It can remove smells and germs. Plus, it has a nice fragrance, so I can go for the next show with a good feeling.”

YUZU DAYS, 6 March 2017

DAYS, 6 March 2017.
Reason for evolution “Heading for greater heights”

Olympic champion, current world records holder, 1st person with 4 consecutive GPF victories, Yuzuru Hanyu says, “I am still far from the skate that I am aiming for.”  Not content with the present situation, Hanyu continues to strive towards greater heights.

I really hate to lose. I absolutely want to win all competitions and I don’t want any kind of regretful feelings. Even during training, on days that I cannot jump well, I feel that I have lost to myself and I will be very frustrated. I cannot help it.  (I’m) already the extreme type of ‘hate-to-lose’. [laughs]

My 'hate-to-lose’ is not just about the win and loss of a competition. When I make a mistake, I have lost to myself who have not grown. When I decide that I want to do this performance, it has to be that performance, I will think that way. Even if I can do it, I am very uncompromising (t/n. or rigid or stubborn) and so until now there has hardly been any time when I felt satisfied.  But failure and frustrated/regretful (kuyashii) feelings are a certain kind of experience. Because there is failure, so there can be reflection;  frustration and regret can also become (coils of) springs. I think that’s why I can keep moving forward.

Figure skating has many components like jumps, spins and steps; it requires not just skating skills but also expressive skills. It is a sport that is extremely multi-faceted. If there is one part that is not going well, there are other parts that can be stretched. For example, if you are not making much progress in jumps, you can polish up steps, spins or expression; there are many areas that you can grow in, if you search for it. As long as you don’t fix your own limits, there is no end to how much you can grow / improve. Further on ahead, with more years of age, even if jumps cannot be done anymore, expressive abilities can be refined, so it can become better in a different sense. When I think of this, there is still a lot more that I can evolve. This is why I think figure skating is so interesting.

Figure skating is a sport that is done by one person on the ice, but the bigger the competition, the bigger the group of people that supports that one competitor. Until I finally reach the ice, there are people who help to get my body ready, the coaches who teach me, and the people in the team. Then there is my mother who supports me in everything from daily life to competitions, and also everyone who sends me cheers at the venue. Heading towards the same direction, all these people are competing together with me. I have the feeling of competing in a team. And because I can feel that I am not alone and everyone is here for me, I can focus, I can work hard and do my best. To all the people who support me, I am truly grateful.

YUZU DAYS, 6 Feb 2017.

–The reason for evolution, “the strength to aim for”–

Last season, Hanyu scored above 300 points in consecutive wins at NHK Trophy and GPF, and his GPF score was registered in the Guinness World Records. This season, he makes further evolution with the 1st successful quad loop in history and challenging 4 types of quads [t/n. should be 4 quads and 3 types] in his free programme. With a 4th straight GPF win which was a first in history, he prepares for World Championships coming up in March [t/n. and also 4CC coming in mid-Feb].  To Hanyu who continues to evolve, what kind of thing is “strength”? We interviewed him.

The ‘strength’ that I am thinking of is not just about abilities, it is also a bit different from strength of spirit; it is actual performance/competition strength….. strength with regards to the environment. Humans, when they face a change in environment, anyone will be anxious, and they cannot perform as usual. Any sports would be like that. Figure skate also, the competition is not in the same environment as the practice. The person who can perform as desired is really a strong competitor. For example, one can be affected when the body feels different due to jet lag or plane movements, or by the mood of the competition or the different feel of the ice. But in the midst of all that, to be able to perform like the usual practice, to perform as desired, to fully show your abilities, that person is really a strong competitor. In that sense, I still have a long way to go. To be able to do a perfect performance without being affected by changes in the environment – I think that is the real meaning of ‘strength’.

During competition, to be under the most tension, to join it with peaking and to show fully your own abilities, I think it is necessary to become such a skater. In any case, that is what I want to aim for.
The reason why I admire/ look up to Plushenko is in there. I have watched him since I was little. When he jumps, even if he leans forward at times, he never falls, he does not make mistakes. I have almost never seen him fail in competition. HE is the undisputed champion.  I want to be like Plushenko;  no matter what competition, to show fully my own abilities without being shaken, I want to aim to become such a skater.

In various environments, the rink for example, the feel of the ice (or texture or quality of the ice) is different. In those conditions, when I jump, how do I get into the feel of the jump, all this becomes experience.  In the end, it is my own feeling, it is not something that someone can teach me, it is whether I can believe in myself or not. That moment before a jump, if you focus and believe 'I can do it’, then you will definitely be able to jump, there is such a thing for sure.

I like listening to interviews of various athletes and coaches.  They all have their own theories… a certain “thing that one can believe in”.  I think my own “thing that I can believe in” will change depending on changes in my mental state and physical condition. But how to respond flexibly to those changes, hereafter how much will I make into experience the “thing I can believe in”, I think that is the work I have to do.

P&G - Requests/Questions for Yuzu, part 2 (19 Nov 2016)

Yuzu answered 2 more questions from fans (submitted to P&G during the off-season).

Q1. I am a high school student. When I study, my concentration power does not last. Hanyu-senshu, how do you improve your concentration power during competitions?

YH: I was also not really the type that can focus a lot on studying. Even now, when I write my university reports, I still think ‘ah I don’t like this’. (laughs) It is hard to focus, isn’t it? In my case, when I can’t concentrate, I try to do it for one minute first. Either one minute or 30 seconds. For reports, I just try writing one sentence first. I try writing it, and then if the next thought does not connect, I rest a while. 2 minutes or 3 minutes. Then I write one more sentence, and I continue to do that, and after 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, without realising it, I have been concentrating, and there have been many times like that.

Competition is different from studying, there is nervousness. Figure skating is not a sport that is done alone, there are many people cheering for you and supporting you. So I think it is easier to concentrate.

–YUZU Album–

I can relax in Toronto;  I can focus on skating.
————————–
Q2: Among your programmes until now, which are the ones that you like very much? (Of course, you have feelings for all of them but is there any that you felt 'I love this choreography!’ or something like that?)

YH: When I was 5 years old, in my first competition, I skated to the opening theme of 'Ultraman’. At that time, I really liked Ultraman and so it was really memorable. And 'Sing Sing Sing’ too, I have liked it from young. My coach said, “If you like it that much, shall we try to skate to it?” I was so happy, and even now I still like it.

I enjoyed skating 'Change’ by Monkey Majik and the Yoshida Brothers. It is an intense programme that has almost no rest, very fun and I like it very much. 'Romeo and Juliet’ of 2011, which was the year of the earthquake disaster, was also very memorable. And then, Phantom of the Opera, a programme which I had wanted to do for a long time…… if I go on listing, it will be endless. (laughs)

P&G Requests/Questions for Yuzu, part 1 (28 Oct 2016)

P&G Requests/Questions for Yuzu, part 1 (28 Oct 2016)

During the off season, P&G asked fans to send in requests or questions for Yuzu and he will pick 3 to do or answer.  Here they are:

Q.1) You devote yourself to practice every day. Do you have a good way to change the mood/take a break?

Y: I am rather the type that can switch off and on very precisely. When I am not training, I am always relaxing! I treasure the things that I want to do then.

Q.2) You often travel around the world (for competitions). Is there a country that you want to visit for a private trip?

Y: Because I am currently living in this way (training in Toronto), there is no foreign country that I want to go to. If anything, I just want to be living comfortably in Japan!

Q.3) Living in Toronto, what is it that you feel is really different from living in Japan?

Y: In my case, because I am very conscious of the fact that I am in Toronto for skating, I feel that it is an environment where I can focus on skating. Besides that, the taste of foodstuff is a bit different from Japan. That is why I sometimes think, ahh I want to eat Japan’s rice.

-YUZU Album-

Y: Toronto is clean and safe, and is a nice place to live in. Although it is a big city, there is a lot of nature, which is one thing that I like.

P&G’s ‘Message to Yuzu’ event.

As noticias sobre Yuzuru Hanyu não param, essa em especial me emocionou porque mostra como Yuzuro é amado e como fica emocionado com todo carinho que recebe dos fãs.

 P&G’s ‘Message to Yuzu’ event.

During the dreadfully long off-season this year, when Yuzuru was in Toronto recovering from injury, and his participation at all Fantasy On Ice shows were cancelled, P&G invited fans to write their messages of support to him either online in their website or at ice show venues.  All the messages were put into an album and given to him.   From P&G article dated 31 Oct 2016:

His eyes opened wide at the size of the box and the thickness of the album.   He was surprised at the amount of messages.  He started reading them immediately and a smile naturally spread across his face.  He looked at the messages slowly one by one, murmuring with deep emotions, “So many people are supporting me…..”

The heartfelt support from everyone has surely become strength for him.   Thank you to all who sent in their messages!  And this is the message he wrote:

“Many messages have been delivered to me;  everyone’s thoughts and feelings have not been in vain.  To these thoughts and smiles, I can continue to skate with my best efforts.  Really, thank you so much.
