Yuzuru’s interview by Shuzo Matsuoka after GPF 2015

Y:  I think this time this was the highest wall (challenge).   But this wall doesn’t come about if it doesn’t occur in succession.  The good score and good performance of the previous competition is a wall for the next competition.   If you can’t overcome this wall, you have to do another good performance at another competition.   If you think about how many more competitions there are to Pyeongchang Olympics, there isn’t much time.

S:  You grasped it so calmly by yourself, this world that’s in a different dimension??
Y:  To me, it’s not a different dimension.  Not a different dimension at all.
S:  So it’s reality?
Y:  Yes, reality.   It’s reality to me.

[Scene of Yuzu crying in kiss n cry after scores were announced.  What were his thoughts then?]

Y:  I didn’t know why I was crying at first.  Brian was saying, “That was good.” Before I saw the final marks, I was already crying, I don’t know why.   I went waaa……  Then I saw Pooh-san, waaa….. I cried again. (laughs)

S:  Pooh-san was involved???

Y:  He is my war buddy who has fought (along with me) all this time……  Maybe my real self came out…..  When I thought about it very calmly, Brian was saying “Really good” and I was saying, “Why am I crying?”  He said, “You did really well.”   I thought through everything and in the end, I realised, I was scared.  I was very scared inside.  But I think, right to the end, I did not know that I was scared.

S:  Fear is a mysterious word.  For example, the fear of “I have to win” at the Olympics, I can somewhat understand that.  But the fear of “the highest record in world history”, no one really knows that….

Y:  For example, Michelle Kwan, Miss Perfect, she won World Championships, but not the Olympics.  I think it was because of the pressure of the title of “Miss Perfect”.  And I think I had a taste of that pressure.  Plus before me, Javier, Patrick and Uno, performed really well and I could hear it.  I could hear everything and I could see the scores.  290, ah so he got higher than 200.   So I think maybe I had the thought that it’s scary.

[scenes of others’ FP]

151214 YUZURU×修造 対談@GPF por YzRIKO

Y:  When I first entered the rink, I did 2 jumps.  I first did a triple loop, made a mistake and I thought, “That’s terrible.”  Then the crowd started going “Javi, Javi….”, the Javi-cheer came.
“Dammit!” I thought, “Just wait and see!”   I dashed round and jumped a triple axel, BANG!!!  IT’S ME!!!!  IT’S ME THAT’S SKATING NOW!!!!

S:  So it turned into power!

[Scenes of ‘Javi cheer’ and Yuzu’s FP]

Narrator:  His score of 330.43 is just 9 marks short of the full marks of 339.44 for this programme.

S:  Have you ever thought about full marks?

Y:  Oda-san has talked about that.  It’s the 1st time to be compared with the full marks!  [laughs]

S:  You have not calculated it yourself?

Y:  I have not even thought about it!

S:  To me, your performance was full marks (perfect).  How about yourself?

Y:  I couldn’t get the (highest level for) steps!!!  [laughter]

Japan representatives’ speech at Japan nationals
Translation by : yuzuland.tumblr

Shoma Uno
“Good evening. In this competition, I was able to deliver satisfying performances. Although I still have some regrets [from these performances], I’m happy to be chosen as representatives for World Championship. I will work hard in training, in order to have good performances at Worlds.”

Yuzuru Hanyu
“Thank you everyone for your support. I have regrets from the performances in this competition. Throughout the season, there are parts that I have improved on and parts that I have yet improve on. I will train hard to prepare for Worlds and aim for good performances in Worlds.”

Satoko Miyahara
“Thank you for your big support in this competition. I think I delivered great performances in this competition but I think there are parts that I’m not happy with. I will work hard so I can show everything that I’m capable of in Worlds.”

Mao Asada
“Good evening, I’m Mao Asada. We have just finished [the competition] but thank you for all your support. After short programme, I wondered [if I can qualify for] Worlds. Since I qualified for a spot in Worlds after [FS] today, I want to train hard in practice to have an even better skate than today’s in Worlds.”

151228 "神対応"について聞いてみた por YzRIKO

Yuzuru’s “godly response” (programme on 28 Dec 2015)
1) Interview after announcement of representatives for Worlds.
Yuzu: I have a lot of regrets (for nationals). But there were also parts where I have grown. And I have areas to work on now.
2) Why was he not able to have a good performance?
Before the performance, (walking to the van) he met his former coach, Mami Yamada, who taught him when he first started skating at 4 years of age. He said he was tired, so she thinks he was not in a very good condition.
Within the span of a month, there was NHK Trophy, GP Final and Japan nationals. His exhaustion had reached a peak.
But Coach Mami Yamada said that, aside from (those 2) jumps, he did not really show his tiredness right to the end of his free skate. So she feels he has grown in this way.
3) Backstage, Yuzu: I did so badly. I am very regretful. I want to practise.
Narrator: He is filled with regret and kept saying he wants to practise, but we managed to capture this, Hanyu’s politeness. After his performance, he thanked everyone that is involved in the event (Yuzu saying a lot of ‘arigatougozaimashita’). Hanyu-senshu is polite, at all times and to everybody.
4) Narrator:  (After his free skate, when he was walking off,) someone threw a towel down and it landed on his head.  Hanyu must be angry?? No, he still had a smile on his face.
And no matter how long and how much photography the cameramen need, Hanyu always has a smile for them. These are examples of his “godly response”. (**t/n. this word 'godly response’ is not a real word but it has been used often for Yuzu because of the amazing things he does and says.)
5) More “godly response”–
@4:35 This interviewer was also the commentator for the competition (together with former skater Takeshi Honda). Before the interview, Yuzu said to him, “You must have studied a lot about figure skating. It must have been tough.  Thank you very much. We are all very grateful.”
The interviewer was very impressed and touched by Yuzu’s words, and he said excitedly, “I got a godly response!!!!!”
Yuzu: I am now over 20 years old. I am 21. I feel I need to be more like an adult. My juniors are also coming up and so I have to be a good role model for them.
Narrator: Thank you, Hanyu-senshu, for your 'godly response’.

Go Yuzuru!

Unfortunately Yuzuru not had a good performance in the Japanese Nationals and ended up not completing their programs cleanly, suffering falls when presented with Chopin and Seimei. Nevertheless, his score won him the gold medal in the competition.
Dissatisfaction of Yuzuru by failing to perform flawlessly was visible. Yuzu always sought to give and best, but he is human and as such is not infallible.
Yuzuru has the right to get tired, make mistakes, be in an unfavorable day; it does not need to hit a record weekly, not be perfect all the time.
We are at the end of another year running in the life of this exceptional skater, who always donated his art, people in need, to his country and his fans.
This all comes at a price, I hope Yuzuru now rest, is restored, enjoy the fellowship of family and friends.
Then come back in full force to win the World Figure Skating Championships 2016.
Yuzuru remember that you have a legion of admirers worldwide applauding you support it  and are with you whatever happens.
From what you've given us and what will still provide.
Yuzuru Go!
