Interview with ANA manager, Ms Shirota.  From skating magazine 「フィギュアスケート日本代表メモリアル」. 

It is actually 5 pages long and a Japanese fan picked out some points in her blog. I have translated her summary.

Yuzuru Hanyu’s current situation:

For the treatment and rehabilitation of his left foot, it has changed to the form of healing while practising; on-ice practice started in early June.
“45 minutes skate, 10 minutes rest”, he is slowly returning in this way.
He showed some worry that he “might not make it in time (for the start of season)”, but if the state of his injury becomes well, he will get back to form.

If it progresses smoothly, he may go for a competition somewhere before GP series, however, he is also prepared that it is fine to rest this season.
“Let’s spend the pre-Olympic season cautiously,” I talked about this with him.

New season, competition programmes

After a mention of Javier, Boyang, Patrick and Shoma.
Now, Hanyu has to prepare programmes that will win competitors like these.

I cannot announce the name of the programme yet, but it has the opinion that “last season it was a quiet piano piece, so this time it may be better to have a complete change?”, the SP including the costume will be very interesting I think.
It seems to be a work where a new him can be seen.
The music gives a similar impression as his past programme ‘Hello I Love You’ and incorporates a lot of upper body movements.

For the free programme, starting from music selection, now it is in a good state. Including the layout, it has taken good form.

The exhibition is choreographed by David Wilson.  It will become a great show number and I am looking forward to its debut.

In anticipation of PyeongChang Olympics

For men, talk of 'quads’ is now becoming 'types of quads’. It fuels his competitive spirit, but the biggest enemy is injury, and so I don’t want him to do anything unreasonable.

What figure skating taught me– “the stage called the world”

The stage called the world

–It’s a dream, it’s also a wall (challenge)–
When I was little, my home rink was my world. Then from junior to senior. And from Japan to the world. I feel that my stage has gradually grown bigger. When I started to skate in the world, it was really like a dream. Until then, it was a world that existed only on TV, so I was continually surprised and amazed by everything. Same as when I first arrived in Canada, everything was exciting and every day was a day of discovery. Competing in the world, I feel the magnitude of it, and at the same time, I also feel the big wall (challenge) of the reality that there are many great skaters who can do things that I cannot do.

–What I should, it’s just one thing!–
Competing on the world stage, there are many areas that are different from Japan. In order to win, you have to master high level skills, and mental strength is also needed. Because the climate, environment and food are all different, you have to manage and take care of your own physical condition. But whether in Japan or in the world, what I have to do is the same. When I think ‘I want to win!’ in the world of high level skaters, there is nothing else but to keep polishing myself (keep improving). I am able to say this now, but the old me could not say something like this.
About fans throughout the world:

–No matter what kind of support, I’m happy–

There is tremendous energy in the support of fans and it always reaches the heart. The feelings of fans who support athletes are the same, no matter what country they are from. But there is a difference in the manner of support. There are fans who like to cosplay to show their support (t/n. I think he means fans who wear Pooh costumes), and there are fans who fill the rink with lots of presents…. the customs and culture of hospitality of the country are shown, and the unique and enthusiastic support raises the excitement level. To support a single athlete, all become united as one, it is something amazing and very happy.

–I want to turn the support into strength–
When the support power is very strong, sometimes I will feel the pressure, in a good sense. Turning that pressure into my own strength is a way of paying back (or living up to) that support. Each time I perform, various sounds arise from the audience area. Depending on the content of the performance, there are expectations, relief, disappointment, etc, but as I skate, the air of the venue moves. I really enjoy that sense of oneness with the whole place and the sense of presence.

To people who are aiming to (compete in) the world:

–Do not be afraid of failure or detours–
It is good if it can become good advice to my juniors in the future, but I feel that I am not in that position yet. My mantra is just “Nothing is a waste.” So even if you take a detour or if you fail, it is a 100% opportunity to reflect and think. It may seem like a waste at that time, but some day it will certainly become food for thought on how not to fail again. Sometimes detours (or a roundabout way) become the shortcut in terms of results. So, the things that you want to do, take on the challenge without fear and cherish the experience. That’s what I wish for them.

Yuzuru Hanyu. university student

I am in the Faculty of Human Sciences 「人間科学部」  and now my major is 「人間情報科学科」(Human Information Science).  What kind of study is that?  The world is overflowing with information;  by what system do people encounter the information, receive it, judge that it is right and continue into action?  On what basis do they do that?  Data is analysed and many things are capitalised on.  I’m learning about the information processing ability of humans, the way they deal with information, of course some things are related to sports and some have nothing to do with sports, such as how changing the position of an office desk affects efficiency and also environmental design with the study of an actual company as an example.  To do one report every week is really tough but I work hard to hand them in.

What figure skating taught me– “Family ties"

~A blessing to be “Hanyu family’s Yuzuru”~
From the time I was in elementary school, whether for skating or daily life, my family gave me self-sacrificing support and I can never thank them enough. Especially my parents who brought me up with the direction of “No matter how much you love skating, we want you to know the world outside of skating”. Even when I became an adult, even when I got the gold medal(s), that has not changed. To my parents and sister, I am still the same as before, eldest son and youngest child of the Hanyu family. And I also want to be “the son of these parents”, I always feel that this is such a blessing.

~Family’s words become strength~
Especially at times when I am feeling troubled, I clearly feel the blessing of family. I know what I should do but I just cannot act on it. At those times, a word or advice from my family becomes a switch, and many times it is an impetus for things becoming better. Particularly from my mum who is always close to me, her words are special. This is what others would say too (about their own mothers), not just me. Mother, how many months she cherished me in her belly, gave birth to me after a hard time, always together with me since I was a baby, because of that, there are things she understands. Those words and thoughts have weight and go straight in, and echo deeply within.

~Each member has a different personality~
The 4 people in the Hanyu family all have different blood types. Not sure if it’s due to that, all our personalities are different. Strong-willed me sometimes get into a trivial argument with Mum, my serious sister will go “maa-maa” (t/n. Japanese way of saying “now, now” to calm things down) and tries to mediate, Dad will be watching with “today, whose side should I take to settle this matter”; it’s often this pattern. (laughs) Because our personalities are different, we recognise that and accept one another, unity is not a problem. Being all different, I think we are a very well-balanced family.

~Dad~
Dad stays in Sendai because of work, so usually he is not with me, but what he has decided stands firm. His presence has that kind of weight. He is like the spiritual pillar supporting the Hanyu family. Long time back, I used to get yelled at, but now, he watches over me and advises me calmly.

~Mum~
Mum is most often with me, and I can tell her anything. Good things, bad things, whatever my thoughts, I just say it out to her honestly. There are also things I don’t say because it will make her worry, but Mum still knows it. In recent years, it is Mum’s role to give me the chiding.

~Big Sister~
Sister is gentle and loving, and always thinking with me from my position. Being a sister, there are things she understands with a different view point from my parents. As children, we also understand each other’s feelings towards our parents.  My relationship with my sister basically has not changed from the time I was 4.  She is still my ‘oneechan’ who spoils me. (*pronounced 'oh-nay-chan’ meaning big sister)

~With family~
During (skate) season, Mum and I are in Canada, so there is very little time that the 4 of us can be together. I really look forward to spending time in my family home. When I return home after a long period, Dad and Sister dotes on me like I’m a little kid. Skating is not mentioned much; we get excited about topics on TV or we enjoy games together. Sometimes we have silly arguments. (laughs) Home is a place where I can return to “original”. It is very comforting.

An interesting bit: 
 
Q: 21 year-old Hanyu-senshu, are there times when you drink alcohol with your family?
When I turned 20 and I returned to Sendai, for celebrating “Coming of Age”, I drank sake for the first time, together with my grandfather and male cousin(s). Then later, Dad also joined in and everyone drank, but my speech started to slur. Sake is nice but I think it does not suit my constitution. As an athlete, not being able to drink alcohol, it’s just right. (laughs)
